Organizational Unit

The World Languages Department (WLE) is a culturally diverse department within the College of Arts & Sciences. The department offers instruction in a variety of languages, literatures and cultures, Classics, and Applied Linguistics. WLE is one of the most active departments on campus and one of the highest producers of student credit hours. WLE houses a PhD program in Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (LALS) as well as Master's programs in Applied Linguistics (TESL), Spanish, and French. It also offers an Undergraduate major in World Languages and Cultures with concentrations in Applied Linguistics, Chinese Language and Culture, Classics, East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Francophone Studies, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish and Latin American Studies. WLE employs approximately 36 faculty (tenure and non-tenure), 3 staff members, and Federal Work Study student assistants.

Position Summary

A Staff Assistant provides general office and administrative support for a department, office, or defined staff group at USF. The Staff Assistant of the World Languages department performs a wide range of support duties including back‑up for front desk, ordering of office supplies, handling professional delivery services, managing conference room reservations, handling office assignments/departmental key orders, general IT support, website/social media/marketing/event coordination, training & supervising FWS Students in the department, training lab proctors of our WLE Language Lab, administrative support for our PhD program, and assisting our Academic Program Specialist with course permits.

Pay Rate: $15.38 hourlyMinimum Qualifications: This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with two or more years of experience in an office or administrative support position. College or other relevant postsecondary coursework may substitute for the experience requirement on a year for year basis. Testing may be required to assess competency on word processing software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's (BA) degree in a Humanities field
  • Multi-lingual; inter- and cross- cultural literacy (international/study abroad experience)
  • Knowledge of university structure and the Humanities
  • Experience developing and maintaining web pages, creating content and updating social media in a professional workplace environment (i.e. using Canva, Dreamweaver or Word Press, HTML, Photoshop, Publisher)

Degree Equivalency Clause: Four years of direct experience for a bachelor's degree.

  • GENERAL SUPPORT - Back-up for front desk/greets & provides information and assistance to visitors. Orders office supplies. Handles professional delivery services for the department. Manages conference room reservations. Handles office
    assignments/departmental key orders, general IT support.
  • WEBSITE/SOCIAL MEDIA /MARKETING/EVENT COORDINATION - Responsible for updating and maintaining content on the department's website and social media pages. Assists with marketing support for undergraduate and graduate programs. Assists with organizing departmental events, film screenings, conferences, lectures, and student recruitment/study abroad fairs.
  • FWS STUDENTS/LAB PROCTORS - Hires, trains, and supervises Federal Work Study students and serves as the front desk receptionist in their absence. Trains proctors of WLE Language Lab for foreign language placement testing/make-up exams and serving as a back-up proctor in their absence.
  • ADM IN/STAFF SUPPORT - Administrative support for PhD program. Assists Academic Program Specialist with issuing course permits. Other administrative duties as assigned by Department Chair.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
