Mechanic 1 (Administrative)



Job Description

Summary/objective
Under general supervision from the Equipment Manager, the Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic I is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and basic repair of automotive vehicles, construction-type, mobile, earth-moving, and load-lifting equipment, as well as heavy-duty, portable, and stationary engines. This role involves assisting in troubleshooting mechanical issues, performing routine servicing, and supporting predictive and preventive maintenance efforts on diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel systems to ensure equipment remains operational and safe.
Essential Functions:

Experience with diesel and gasoline engines, including an understanding of their operating principles.
Familiar with diagnostic software (Cummings Insite, Bendix Acom, Cat ET).
Experience with and understanding of hydraulics (pumps, cylinders, valves). Perform highly technical work on hydraulic systems, fabrication projects, and rebuilding assignments.
Familiar with DEF and DPF systems and their role in vehicle emissions control.
Experienced with air brake systems and able to make repairs.
Perform 90-day BIT inspections and complete all required forms, ensuring compliance with standard safety precautions.
Drivetrain experience, including knowledge of operating principles of light and heavy-duty vehicles.
Auto electrical diagnostics, including electronic control systems typically found on modern automotive equipment.
Perform diagnostics of electronically controlled systems such as engines, fuel injection, and transmission systems.
Tire mounting and tire repairs, ensuring proper tire rotation and air levels.
Welding and fabrication skills are a plus.
Service vehicles and equipment with fuel, oil, grease, water, and hydraulic fluids; assure proper fluid levels; lubricate gearboxes and chassis such as suspension, steering, and driveline; drain and refill crankcases; replace fuses.
Schedule and set priorities for maintenance and repair work on company equipment, coordinating with other departments and divisions as needed.
Make an initial inspection of equipment to be repaired and diagnose defects using appropriate methods, materials, tools, and techniques.
Locate, correct, and adjust defects in light and heavy-duty vehicular and mechanical equipment.
Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
Identify and order necessary parts for repairs, developing estimates and determining which supplier can meet needs.
Operate engine and electrical diagnostic equipment, ARC and gas welders, soldering gun, air jacks, forklift, engine hoists, grinders, steam cleaner, high-pressure washer, meters, gauges, hydraulic press, drill press, and a variety of power and hand tools to complete repairs.
Read, interpret, and work from sketches, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
Ensure shop areas are maintained in a clean and orderly condition, hazardous materials are stored, used, and disposed of properly, and tools and equipment are cared for appropriately.
Competently and safely operate and maintain tools used in vehicle and mechanical equipment repair work.
Understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate mechanical issues and required repairs effectively with supervisors and team members.
Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to maintain safety and quality standards.
Regularly inspect the worksite to identify and address cleanliness and organizational issues before they become problems. Report any maintenance or repair needs promptly to ensure timely resolution.
Observe safety and security procedures, assess potential risks, and minimize workplace hazards. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
Balance team and individual responsibilities, demonstrate objectivity and openness to others' views, and contribute to a positive team environment.
Show respect for diverse perspectives, skills, and backgrounds of team members, fostering an inclusive work environment.

Work Environment:

All work is performed either inside the machine shop with open bay doors, or outside in various types of weather (i.e., heat, cold, wind, sun, and inclement weather, etc.).
Exposure to all types of automotive solvents.
Exposure to all elements of nature on a regular basis.
Exposure to loud noises.
Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc.

Physical Demands - The physical demands below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

Must have good visual and auditory physical capabilities in order to manage sights and sounds in a hazardous machine shop environment.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Coordination between hands, eyes, and feet to guide equipment and objects is required.
Occasionally sit; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Must be able to push and pull with hands, arms, and feet repetitively.
Must be able to push, pull, climb, sit, and stretch regularly while performing the essential functions of the job.
Must be able to be alert and cognitive of multiple concurrent activities, including awareness of other employees, subcontractors, machinery, equipment, and moving traffic when applicable.
Must be able to work around loud noises.
Must be able to mount and dismount safely off vehicles and equipment.
Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Must be able to work overtime as requested.
Must be able to walk on uneven terrain.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.

Travel Required:

Position travels outside the local area, but usually within Northern California, 10 to 20% of the time.

Required Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent or 1 Year Vocational experience in automotive or equipment repair training.
Must be mechanically inclined.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Heavy equipment mechanic experience: 1-3 years
Fleet mechanic experience: 1-3 years

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

Must have a valid driver license. A commercial driver license is a plus.
Clean Driving Record: 5 years
Must be able to provide Motor Vehicle Record at time of job offer.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Cellphone for communication, scheduling and timecard entry.
