Teaching Laboratory Manager (Finance)

The Department of Molecular Biosciences is home to approximately 24 full-time faculty, over 70 graduate students, and offers courses to approximately 1,200 undergraduate students. The department pursues excellence in the following programmatic research areas: Genome Integrity, Bacterial Pathogenesis, Molecular Biophysics and Systems Biology, Biomedical Sciences and STEM Ed. We offer two Bachelor of Science degree programs, two Non-Thesis Master of Science programs, two Thesis Master of Science programs and two doctoral programs.

Position Summary:
\n
This position requires an experienced biological teaching lab manager to manage lower division laboratory courses, such as General Biology I, Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology II. This position will require coordination of the lower division laboratory courses, mentorship and guidance of the graduate teaching assistants and adjunct lab instructors, inventory management, laboratory safety compliance, and minimal teaching in the laboratory courses and will report to the Undergraduate Program Director and Department Chair. The Teaching Laboratory Manager will interact with faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students to revise and improve the laboratory course curricula for the department.

This position is eligible for hybrid schedule after completion of a 3-month training period and supervisor approval.

Start Date: August 1, 2025Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a field related to the discipline of the work, and one year of related experience. Work experience related to the discipline of the work may be substituted for the degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or PhD degree from an accredited institution in the field of Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience tutoring or instructing students in biology topics and presenting information to small groups.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Canvas or similar LMS (learning management system).

  • Lab Coordination: Lead laboratory training and supervise activities of the graduate teaching assistants (TA}, adjunct lab instructors and undergraduate student workers. Coordinate weekly meetings to provide support, and instructional and laboratory resources for upcoming laboratory sessions to TAs and adjunct lab instructors. Provide TAs with laboratory manuals, course content materials, laboratory access/keys, and information regarding laboratory procedures, location and proper use of materials, and the operation of equipment. Coordinate the assignment of TAs and adjunct lab instructors to specific laboratory sections. Complete TA and adjunct lab instructor evaluations each semester to ensure proper assessment of teaching ability and effectiveness. Resolve student issues and complaints pertaining to academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and grade issues if they are not resolved by the TA or adjunct lab instructor.

  • Supplies & Equipment: Update and maintain inventory for all laboratory supplies and equipment. Place orders for supplies as needed. Track budget for all expenses according to the specific laboratory course that requires the supplies. Pick up orders at Central Receiving and distribute as necessary to appropriate locations.

  • Teaching & Development: Update and maintain the laboratory manuals. Continued development of the laboratory curriculum. Teach a laboratory course every year to maintain content knowledge of the laboratory curriculum.

  • Lab Safety: Update and maintain emergency manuals with information provided from EH&S. Enforce dress code and laboratory safety rules. Maintain hazardous waste disposal. Flush eyewash stations. Facilitate in all laboratory safety inspections.
