Mental Health Specialist I (498) (Personal Services)

Job Summary /Purpose

The Mental Health Specialist (MHS) provides a variety of cultural and age-appropriate mental health and suicide prevention education across K-12 grade levels for the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP). The MHS position will promote mental well-being, reduce stigma associated with mental health challenges, and equip students, educators, and parents with essential knowledge and skills to identify, address, and prevent mental health crises, including suicide. The MHS will engage in school-based and community outreach events throughout Madera County and provide linkage to appropriate services when a need for additional services or higher level of care is determined to be necessary.

How will I contribute

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborate with school administration to set up and facilitate mental health and suicide prevention educational services.
Increase awareness of mental health and suicide prevention through educational presentations to students, school staff, parents and to community partners.
Facilitate group discussions while implementing best practices and evidence-based curriculum.
Promote student wellness by building skills in emotion/anger management, self-awareness, conflict resolution, communication, wellness tools, crisis prevention plans, and other related topics.
Serve as liaison and communicate with participants, parents, and community providers to ensure linkage to appropriate community resources/services.
Collaborate with school and community agencies to provide outreach services across Madera County events.
Ability to travel to school and community locations to provide contracted services, including Northern and Eastern Madera County.
Participate in community Coalitions and outreach events to promote YEP services and other mental health wellness resources.
Maintain and submit accurate and timely data/reports.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.
Use of company vehicles may be subject to monitoring via in-vehicle dashcam systems for safety, compliance, and operational purposes. These systems may collect video, audio (in limited situations), and telematics data during vehicle use. As a condition of employment in a position requiring the operation of agency vehicles, employees are required to acknowledge and consent to the use of such monitoring technologies. Refusal to provide consent may disqualify an individual from being assigned driving responsibilities. All monitoring is conducted in compliance with applicable California privacy laws.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelors Degree (Mental health, human services, social work, psychology, or related.1-year experience working with youth.Class C Driving LicenseKnowledge of symptoms and behaviors of mental illness; basic principles of trauma-informed care, socialization, and practical life management skills; methods of interviewing, crisis intervention, and assessing psychosocial behaviors; strength-based and culturally appropriate services.
Ability to process emotionally intense situations. Ability to engage youth during group-setting instruction. Some flexibility in schedule/hours is required. Comfortable with public speaking, social media, and PowerPoint content creation. Ability to work in a juvenile justice facility with incarcerated youth.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Action-oriented. Strong problem-solving skills. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask and prioritize daily duties.Preferred experience working with school-aged youth; Ability to work independently and self-motivated.
