Senior Automotive Mechanic (Finance)
The Senior Automotive Mechanic will be responsible for troubleshooting and performing complex mechanical repairs, such as diagnosing engine knocks, unusual noises, or failures, as well as diagnosing issues with transaxles, transmissions, and differentials on a variety of gasoline and alternative fuel-powered automobiles and light trucks. Additionally, the Senior Automotive Mechanic will lead and train other mechanics and perform installations of smog devices and specialized equipment on vehicles.
Competitive candidates will possess experience utilizing Fleet Management systems and Microsoft Office, including Outlook and Excel. Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity, as well as previous automotive maintenance experience working in the public sector, is also highly desired.
Selected applicants will be required to supply their own personal hand tools; all other tools (e.g., lifts, brake machines) will be provided.
This position follows a 9/80 schedule, working Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Meet the Team!
The Purchasing and Fleet Services Department's primary function is to provide vehicles, goods and services to other County Departments and agencies within the County of Riverside. Providing a unified purchasing system that ensures integrity and fairness, with centralized responsibility for oversight of solicitation, vendor selection, negotiation, award, contract management, reporting, disposal of surplus property and emergency logistical support for the benefit of Riverside County agencies.• Assigns, evaluates, and participates in the major and minor mechanical repairs on motorized vehicles powered by gas and alternative fuel engines including automobiles and light trucks.
• Estimates time and materials needed for a variety of repair work; requisitions materials and supplies; and assists in the training of less experienced mechanics and service workers.
• Performs the more difficult mechanical repairs; diagnoses motor knocks, noises or failures; diagnoses transaxle, transmission, and differential failures; interprets computer command control fault codes; reads, comprehends, and follows electrical and mechanical schematics.
• Performs installation of smog devices and special equipment on vehicles.
• Performs random quality assurance inspections on completed vehicle repairs; inspects the garage for safety violations; and conducts monthly safety meetings as directed.
• Assumes responsibility of the garage in the absence of the Automotive Services Supervisor.Experience: Two years as a journey level automotive mechanic.
License/Certificate:
Possession of a valid California driver's license, Class "C" or higher.
Additionally, an Unlimited Smog License and Brake Adjuster's License is required. Candidates without current valid Unlimited Smog and/or Brake Adjuster's Licenses who are selected to fill this position classification have one year from the time of appointment to obtain this/these licenses.
Knowledge of: Tools, equipment, practices and materials used in the maintenance and repair of light motorized vehicles; principles of internal combustion engines.
Ability to: Diagnose motor knocks, noise, or failures; diagnose and repair fuel injection systems and drivability problems; operate equipment used in repairing, servicing, and analyzing engine performance; diagnose and repair heating and air conditioning failures, brake systems, emission control systems, and major component repair; estimate time and materials needed to complete a job; do mechanical work; assign, direct, and evaluate the work of others; understand and follow oral and written instructions.Essential Physical Abilities:
The Senior Automotive Mechanic works in a garage or outdoors and is exposed to inclement weather. This position requires independent body mobility to stand and move heavy mechanical components, engines, and systems from several types of vehicles utilizing a crane. The Senior Automotive Mechanic must also be able to perform tasks involving lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling heavy objects with assistance, and walking on uneven or wet surfaces while carrying tools.
All applicants must submit proof of their current valid licensing or sign a written agreement to obtain such required license(s) within one year of appointment before they will be appointed. All applicants must also maintain as current all required licenses in order to maintain the Senior Automotive Mechanic position.
