Fiber Engineer (Architecture)



Position Title: Fiber Engineer (T4)

Role

As a Fiber Engineer, you will focus on Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) projects on a national scale. The engineer is responsible for all aspects of fiber design and allocation, route design, map creation, permit issuance, and as-built records updates. 

Responsibilities

  • Create fiber designs for FTTH and other designs/architecture 
  • Utilize GIS software to create geospatial records and attribution of designs 
  • Complete analysis for project forecasting and budgeting
  • Review cable capacity and power loss budgets to ensure the network operates within required parameters. 
  • Design fiber route and produce all necessary deliverables and splicing prints for permit drawings, cable placement, and splicing assignments
  • Provide fiber assignments to Construction Team for lateral fibers to last demark panel
  • Create Bill of Materials (BOM) for projects and estimate total deployment costs 
  • Submit all necessary Change management notifications and adhere to field activity policies and guidelines.
  • Provide Operations/Provisioning with final DLR's & test shots for closeout
  • After completion close out tasks in appropriate system(s).
  • Approve vendor invoices for the project.
  • Work hand in hand with Fiber Construction Managers.
  • Create work orders for overbuild and expansion projects.
  • Review cable capacity and power loss budgets to ensure the network operates within required parameters. 
  • Fiber Engineers are responsible for all emergency and trouble response. All engineers participate in On-Call rotation.
  • Work jointly with the NOC, Field Operations, and Change management; and mobilize necessary repair crews to isolate and restore any fiber impairments.

Education/Certifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2-year technical degree or equivalent work experience
  • BS/BA (preference to Civil, Construction, or Electrical, Engineering Degrees) or equivalent work experience preferred
  • A valid driver's license required

Experience/Minimum Requirements

  • One (1)+ years of fiber engineering and construction management experience or equivalent and one (1)+ years of field construction management experience with preference to both outside plant and inside plant fiber construction.
  • Knowledge of Outside Plant Construction techniques (aerial & underground) preferred
  • Working knowledge of NESC, NEC and OSHA standards preferred

Other Skills/Abilities

  • Preference will be given to candidates with BSCE, or equivalent work experience
  • Preference will be given to candidates with AutoCAD, ESRI, or other GIS drafting and mapping tools.
  • Ability to code in Python preferred
  • Excellent organizational/administrative skills
  • Strong project management skills with attention to details
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a high level of integrity
  • Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, Visio, Word and PowerPoint) skills

Organizational Relationship

Reports to: Manager Fiber Engineering

Working Conditions: This role falls into our hybrid work model working in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  On Mondays and Fridays, teammates on the hybrid schedule will have the option to work from the office or home.  There is an expectation to work in the field with exposure to RF emissions, construction materials, noise, and waste. Physical demands of lifting up to 60 pounds, stooping and/or standing for extended periods, and climbing ladders in adverse weather and heat. Travel up to 40% may be required.

The pay range offered for this position is $33.85-$46.49 per hour. A candidate's offer is determined by various factors including but not limited to, depth of experience, role-related knowledge and skills, relevant education or training, internal alignment, and work location.  Depending on the position offered, the compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of a discretionary annual cash bonus or commissions, and equity incentives. Employees (and their families) are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are able to enroll in our company's 401k plan. Employees will also receive a minimum of 18 days of paid time off each year and 12 paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
