Lead R&D Engr/Scientist (Finance)

An excellent career opportunity is currently available for a Lead R&D Engineer/Scientist at Honeywell/ Energy Sustainability Solutions within UOP's R&D Catalysis Fundamentals and Applications Research Group located in Des Plaines, IL. This position provides a unique opportunity to direct computational modeling & simulation efforts necessary for the development of novel catalysts, materials and applications for Honeywell's ESS Division. You will play a central role in the HON/ESS team by employing state-of-the-art modeling & simulation tools to provide fundamental insights into material properties and their behavior in applications ranging from heterogeneous catalysts and conversion of various feedstocks, adsorbents, membranes, and materials for advanced energy storage.This position provides a unique opportunity to direct computational modeling & simulation efforts necessary for the development of novel catalysts, materials and applications for Honeywell's ESS Division.You must have

  • Advanced Degree in Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or Material Science from an accredited institution
  • 8+ years of experience in advanced materials or specialty chemicals industrial research and/or new product development

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry/Material Science with emphasis on modeling & simulation applied to new material and catalysts development
  • Strong fundamentals in two or more modeling & simulation techniques - quantum mechanics, molecular mechanics, process modeling, CFD, FEA, AI/ML
  • Expertise in modeling a wide variety of materials, catalysts and processes
  • Proficient in at least one programming language - Python, R, MATLAB
  • Expertise in more than one simulation packages - Gaussian, DMOL3, CASTEP, VASP, QuantumESPRESSO, COSMOTherm, LAMMPS, GROMACS, Towhee/Cassandra, UniSim/Aspen, Ansys
  • Experience in employing data science and AI/ML techniques for development of new materials and catalysts
  • Familiarity with Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) principles
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Technical curiosity and passion for R&D
  • Desire and ability to identify, develop, and improve new technical concepts and products
  • External orientation and desire to accurately understand technology trends, customer unmet needs, and working with external partners
  • Proficient in leading technical projects involving scientists, engineers, application development and marketing
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
  • Reliable and trustworthy with the highest ethical standards and integrity
Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and solve problems where fundamental insights from computational modeling & simulation can accelerate the design and development of new materials or catalysts relevant to ESS applications
  • Collaborate with teams across ESS to identify new catalysts and material concepts for new or current ESS applications and advance them to proof of concept
  • Act as first screen in design of new catalysts and materials by rapidly down-selecting from a list of thousands or millions of candidate materials to identify few most promising ones
  • Develop, implement, and maintain efficient simulation methodologies required for design of new products and/or processes, validation of new applications, and plant/customer/regulatory support
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in modeling & simulation methodologies and implement the most promising ones based on current needs
  • Work simultaneously on multiple projects across diverse areas while ensuring timely deliverables are met
  • Maintain software versions and licenses up-to-date and work closely with Honeywell HPC team to resolve problems encountered during installations and upgrade/refresh of HPC servers
  • Identify, coordinate, and work with external research, academic and new venture partners to prioritize and accelerate learning of application and materials and/or catalysts performance requirements
  • Translate voice of the customer and customer unmet needs to material and/or catalysts performance requirements
  • Work with customers and Honeywell/ESS marketing to meet needs in a fast-paced environment
  • Follow all related safety and environmental rules and regulations

The annual base salary range for this position is $110K- $140K. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.
