Illumina Laboratory Services (ILS) is an exciting and rewarding organization that applies Illumina's core sequencing and array technology to sustain existing Illumina's service offering while driving implementation of new assays and technologies into clinical laboratory service offering. ILS works cross functionally to meet customer demands while also exploring new offerings within the clinical space. As a Scientist 2 in ILS, you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment integrating molecular biology, sequencing chemistry and automation together into end-to-end assays to accelerate the impact of genomics testing in healthcare.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and perform experiments of varying complexity with guidance from given objectives across a broad array of techniques in CLIA, CAP and ISO13485 compliant environment.
  • Foresees issues and works to overcome obstacles to complete tasks or assignments.
  • Makes detailed technical observations and documents them in laboratory notebooks.
  • Helps plan and execute verification and validation studies.
  • Takes responsibility for training others, raising the consistency and quality of data collection of the team, while establishing criteria and/or work procedures to achieve a high level of quality and productivity.
  • Collaborate with SMEs cross-functionally.
  • Supports clinical laboratory and product development processes.

Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Sound laboratory skills required.
  • Experience in good documentation practices.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology/nucleic acid-based protocols for both DNA and RNA
  • Experience working in Pre/Post-PCR and Biosafety Level 2 laboratory environments.
  • Experience handling hazardous and biohazardous materials including clinical specimens.
  • Ability to design complex experiments containing appropriate controls to anticipate potential problems; able to troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience with statistics, Statistical Process Control and DOE techniques.
  • Able to draw sound conclusions from complex experiment data sets.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple disciplines with team members and internal customers.

Preferred:

  • Clinical experience developing or validating assays (IVD, LDT, and/or CDx) in a regulated environment.
  • Background/expertise in Sequencing, non-invasive prenatal testing, proteomics, methylation, single cell, or oncology preferred.
  • Experience with design controls, risk management, and change management preferred.
  • Prior experience with study design for validations/verifications preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing technologies is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with automation / liquid handling robots (e.g. Tecan, Hamilton, Eppendorf) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of NGS secondary analysis and data analysis software tools such as JMP or R desirable.

The estimated base salary range for the Scientist 2 role based in the United States of America is: $84,600 - $127,000. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
