Sports Director, WTMJ (Healthcare)



WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company, is hiring a Sports Director. The Sports Director will turn content daily, while leading the team into the next evolution of local sports. This is not a traditional sports role. We're searching for someone who can push the boundaries on all platforms and tap into the big sports stories of the day. We are searching for a sports enthusiast who's an expert in digital and social media and is excited about everything Milwaukee has to offer.  The Sports Director is a leadership position and is not entry-level. WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Receive assignments or evaluate sports leads and news tips to develop story ideas.

  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories.

  • Organize material and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.

  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.

  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.

  • Be on-air in pre-recorded and live situations.

  • Work cooperatively with photographers assigned to stories, if one is assigned.

  • Post stories and videos to digital platforms and social media sites.

  • Represent the station at community events.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline preferred or equivalent years of experience

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics, and libel laws

  • Generally, 3 - 5+ years of experience preferred

  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems; videography and non-linear editing experience.

  • Knowledge of broadcast-quality camera equipment

  • Knowledge of video systems

  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills

  • Proficient at posting content to various websites and social media sites

  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and ability to provide proof of insurance with the company's required insurance limits
