R&D Engr/Scientist II (Finance)

As an R&D Engineer/Scientist II here at Honeywell, you will be responsible for conducting research and development activities to support the UOP business unit. You will work on innovative projects and collaborate with a team of engineers and scientists to develop new technologies and solutions. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of the UOP portfolio and make a significant impact to research, manufacturing science and process technology. You will report directly to our R&D Senior Manager, and you'll work out of our Des Plaines, IL location.

Responsibilities:

This position requires the person to be familiar with current sensors and process analyzer technologies and will include the following activities:

  • Support the sensor team in implementing, maintaining and improving the sensor solutions for the inline/online control of research, pilot plant, and commercial digital solutions.
  • Work at all stages of R&D, including proof-of-concept projects, method development, inline/offline implementation, data analysis, AI/ML modeling, and support new commercial product development.
  • Work actively and closely with internal R&D and digital service customers to optimize sensor applications for inline analysis, offline characterization, and improved manufacturing operations.
  • Contribute to evaluating and providing reports on the data acquired.
  • Assist in developing exploratory research projects to evaluate innovative technologies or new software systems used in both online and offline analysis, including multivariate analysis programs, alternative analytical techniques, and new instrumentation (e.g., NMR, Raman, etc.).
  • Support the commercial development of sensor-enabled digital solutions by supporting NPD development projects and customer applications.

Will be working heavily in the following area:

Sensors and process analyzers

Inline/online spectroscopy and chromatography

Method development

Proof of concept planning and application

Use a wide range of software including Python, MS Office.

Accountable for working in compliance with all HS&E safety requirements and procedures.

The annual base salary range for this position is $90,400-$113,200. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or related
  • 3+ years of work experience in R&D laboratory operations, preferably with hands-on application experience in a broad range of various types of process analyzers and sensors applicable to the gas and oil industry
  • Research experience with instrumental analytical chemistry procedures, including quantitative analysis.
  • Ability to work in a safety intensive (HS&E) oriented environment, including training and use of laboratory PPE.

WE VALUE

  • An understanding of chemical processes in the oil and gas industry
  • Knowledge of industry standards and emerging practices that apply to automation for online applications
  • Experience in sensors and process analytical technologies (PAT) such as optical sensors (NIR, Raman, UV-Vis), online GC or MS, or process monitoring sensors (viscosity, density, conductivity, pH, etc.)
  • Experience with cross-functional teams to achieve milestone objectives
  • Experience in New Product Development leading to commercial success
  • Experience with sensor system development such as prototyping tools (e.g. Arduino, Rasberry Pi), sensor communication protocols (e.g. analog, I2C, Modbus, UART, etc.), and electronics design (e.g. circuit design, layout, soldering, etc.).
  • Experience with modeling and quantitative analysis (e.g. Chemometrics, Python, JMP, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Experience with AI/ML modeling with lab, pilot plant and/or industrial process data
  • Industrial design talent and experience
  • Ability to work independently and creatively
  • Willingness to learn new technologies
  • An open, honest, and team-oriented personality
  • Eagerness to perform hands-on work in an R&D environment
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and presentation skills
