The Librarian, Research and Instruction plays a key role in supporting student retention and success by offering research and instructional assistance to students at the Alfred A. Neumann Library. The Librarian helps students navigate the library catalog and databases to locate credible, reliable resources for their research projects. Additionally, the Librarian collaborates with faculty across the university to deliver information literacy sessions, teaching students how to effectively navigate the information landscape, access and evaluate research materials, and develops essential critical thinking and information literacy skills to assist students in achieving their academic goals at UHCL.

Duties:
  • Participates in all aspects of library instructional services, including face-to-face teaching and the creation of course-specific resources, guides, online tutorials, and web pages for use in both traditional and virtual environments with particular attention devoted to resources for freshmen. Collaborates with faculty in order to integrate information literacy into the curriculum and to prepare active-learning-based instructional sessions and resources to meet student learning needs.
  • Provides in-depth information and research assistance at the Research Consultation Desk and by telephone, email, instant message, and other communication technologies on a daily basis, including one evening per week when classes are in session and on weekends as assigned. Provides one-on-one instruction in use of print and electronic resources, including the library catalog, databases, reference sources, and Internet resources.
  • Maintains knowledge of library's collection and resources. Composes and revises collection development statements in assigned subject areas, with input from faculty. Selects electronic and print resources in assigned subject areas to support the university's teaching and research mission. Participates in and makes recommendations for collection evaluation projects. Responsible for existing collections in assigned subject areas by replacing materials and, when necessary, removing materials.
  • Communicates with faculty (in assigned subject areas) to increase their awareness of library resources and services, to better inform library collection development, and to improve library instructional services to their students and the program area.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining online research guides for assigned subject areas.
  • Works as a member of the Public Services professional team in implementing library policy and in planning library services. Participates in special projects to develop and improve library services. Serves on library committees, task forces, and UHCL shared governance committees and performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.
  2. Minimum one year experience in library instruction or other teaching experience at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • More than one year of experience in library instruction or other teaching experience at the college level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and information literacy trends in research libraries and higher education.
  • Knowledge of research support via varied modalities such as email, phone, or in-person support.
  • Skills in research support at a library.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintaining collaborative partnerships and services with and for faculty, students, and other university departments.
  • Ability to take initiative and be flexible as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex and diverse environment.
  • Ability to design and deliver face-to-face and online instruction, including training, workshops, and classroom sessions.
  • Ability to identify print or electronic resources to support collection development at a library.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development in library instruction and research.
