Under the supervision of the Center Director and Coordinator of Food Services, the Cook shall be responsible for working within the framework of Harbor Child Care, carrying out its functions, policies, and procedures which include, but are not limited to:

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Reports to Center Director/ Coordinator of Food Services to serve food to children ages infants thru 12 years old.
  • Under supervision of the Center Director/Coodrinator of Food Services, the Cook is responsible for preparing and serving all food in the center in accordance with the standards set forth by the U.S.D.A. Food Program and NYS OCFS regulations.
  • Under supervision of the Center Director/Coordinator of Food Services, the Cook is responsible for maintaining the kitchen in a sanitary and efficient condition in accordance with standards set forth by the Nassau County Department of Health.
  • Prepares, cooks and serves food according to recommended practices
  • Follows all CACFP guidelines and maintains production records as per CACFP guidelines and reports to Director of Food Services/Center Director.
  • Follows weekly menu, consulting Coordinator of Food Services and Director when menu changes are indicated (i.e., necessary substitution, use of leftovers).
  • Apportions food for children's groups according to need.
  • Makes local food purchases when necessary.
  • Washes dishes and utensils according to sanitary practices, and maintains kitchen equipment and food storage rooms in clean, sanitary and orderly condition.
  • Removes kitchen garbage to outside receptacle and cleans container.
  • Maintains simple inventory of food and household supplies and keeps on hand as needed.
  • Cares for children in times of staffing shortages.
  • Informs Center Director and Coodrinator of Food Services, of needed food supplies, repairs and replacement of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Reports breakdown of kitchen equipment to Coordinator of Food Services and Center Director.
  • Responsible for storing, or for supervising the storage of all food and household supplies.
  • Maintains accurate menu counts on numbers of snacks and lunches and breakfasts served daily.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings/trainings
  • Prepares meals in advance when necessary and serves in a timely manner.
  • Informs Center Director/Coordinator of Food Services of all kitchen functions.
  • Cares for children in the event of an emergency or unusual number of teacher absences and will perform any other reasonable duty as needed for the cohesive operation of the child care center.

H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience working in a kitchen.

Food Handlers Certificate
