Research and Impact Communications Specialist (Education)



Job Summary
The overall purpose of this position is to develop and maintain various forms of content in support of the goals and communication objectives of IEEE TryEngineering programs. The incumbent in this position is responsible for understanding communication requirements; following established standards and best practices; proactively researching assigned and self-identified content topics; creating content for a variety of staff, volunteer, member and public audiences; collaborating with staff and volunteer subject matter experts; and supporting communication plans for a variety of highly-visible IEEE TryEngineering programs and operations that support IEEE's strategic goals.

Projects include, but are not limited to, content for slide decks, multimedia presentations , web page content, technical content as assigned, reports, and planning documents. The contributions of this individual will improve the effectiveness of communications from, and within, IEEE pre-university activities as a whole, and assist the IEEE Educational Activities volunteers and staff in reaching goals and their potential in their IEEE leadership roles.

The role reports to the Director, Student and Academic Education Programs and functions as both an individual contributor and part of staff and volunteer teams. The role does not manage any direct reports.


Key Responsibilities
  • Communications: 70%
  • Research, assemble data, and write reports to support pre-university programs
  • Ensure content and deliverables meet staff, volunteer, user, technical and creative expectations.
  • Proactively work with staff and volunteer subject matter experts to identify and understand content needing to be developed or updated.
  • Research, write and edit technical and promotional content
  • Periodically review and update existing content such as web pages, electronic presentations, and other electronic communications.
  • Proactively work with staff and volunteer teams to raise awareness and socialize content to targeted audiences.
  • Use proven best practices, methods and standards.
  • Collaborate with staff on the content of the tryengineering.org website
  • Serve as staff contact and support for content and communications issues.
  • Support Outreach Events and Initiatives: 15%
  • Collaborates with other members of the Student and Academic Team to support communications necessary for successful event
  • Collaborates with volunteers and staff to document results of each event and awareness overall.
  • Attends events as assigned by management.
  • Administrative Tasks: 15%
  • Prepare timelines, documents and manuals to promote collaboration and organization
  • Collaborate with other departments in IEEE, including Marketing, Corporate Activities, the IEEE Foundation, Technical Activities and Legal & Compliance, and others as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Travel Information
  • 10% Domestic and International This role will require travel 10% of the time or less.
Work Experience
  • Less than 2 years Equivalent experience writing and editing for the web and other electronic communications; planning and executing content in support of communications campaigns; and following corporate brand, style and usage guides. Req
  • Prior association experience Pref
  • Experience working with volunteer Boards and Committees Pref
Skills and Requirements
  • Possesses excellent verbal, written, organizational skills and strict attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively compose communications intended for audiences who read/write English as a 1st or 2nd language.
  • Ability to write and tailor content for a variety of audiences.
  • Fluent in business English and capable of speaking effectively on the telephone and in person-to-person situations.
  • Strong command of various Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Professional is required, including high proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS preferred.
  • Experience with basic graphics and photo manipulation, preferably using Adobe Photoshop.
  • Must be a technologically savvy worker with a positive and proactive attitude
  • Handles multiple assignments simultaneously with changing priorities, meeting deadlines and resolving issues.
  • Excels at working independently and among a diverse team in a fast-moving environment.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, interfacing with multiple stakeholders and demonstrating flexibility and creativity.
