Materials Scientist Intern (Finance)



What We Are Looking For

We're currently seeking a driven and innovative Material Scientist Intern to join our R&D team in San Diego, CA. In this role, you'll work on the forefront of regenerative medicine-partnering with our bioprinting Materials team and United Therapeutics collaborators to develop advanced chemical solutions for 3D bioprinting. You'll contribute to critical R&D efforts in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, leveraging your expertise in material science to push the boundaries of 3D printing for human health applications. This is a unique opportunity to create real impact by helping develop technologies for transplantable human organs!

Onsite

This role has an onsite work schedule requiring the person to be in the onsite location 5 days a week.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and execute R&D initiatives related to bioprinting systems, including material development, post-processing, microscope imaging, and mechanical testing.
  • Formulate and perform quality control for photopolymer and hydrogel materials.
  • Contribute to the development, design, and execution of diagnostics and data acquisition processes using bio-based printing materials.
  • Support process development of hydrogel printing methods.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental results through slide decks and interactive presentations.
  • Use scientific instruments to evaluate the resolution, structure, and mechanical properties of 3D printed parts.
  • Drive innovation by implementing novel chemical solutions in an emerging and fast-evolving scientific field.
  • Term: This is a 12-week research-based position located in San Diego, CA.
What You Will Bring

  • Academic background in chemistry, polymer science, or related material science field.
  • Prior experience in academic or industrial laboratory settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to work independently and contribute meaningfully without close supervision.
  • Eagerness to learn new techniques and a passion for solving complex scientific challenges.
  • Experience with CAD is a plus but not required.
  • Prior 3D printing experience is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with scientific presentation tools and the ability to effectively communicate technical results.
